What Does (And Doesn’t) Homeowner’s Insurance Cover?

April 24, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

houses-2230817_960_720If you have a homeowner’s policy you will know that there are different types of coverages that exist—but an interesting fact is that J.D. Power & Associates did a study in 2019 and found that 52% of policyholders didn’t know what their policy actually covers! And that meant that homeowners didn’t know both what is covered and what coverages they should actually have for themselves!

Policies usually have Dwelling Coverage as the main part of a policy—which covers your home! Personal Property Coverage, which covers things you own within your home. And Other Structure Coverage, which covers other buildings on your property such as a garage, driveway, fences—anything that isn’t created by nature that is on your property pretty much!

There is another component that is usually a part of a Homeowner’s Insurance policy, and it is very beneficial: Personal Liability Coverage! If you had someone get hurt on your property and it was your fault you would be covered—or if you damaged someone else’s property, you would be covered! It can cover legal fees too!holiday-house-177401_960_720

What isn’t covered on a standard policy is a bit confusing too since you will probably think you will be covered if one of these happens! Acts of God such as earthquakes and flooding are usually not covered, if the sewer backs up into your house you probably aren’t covered, or things like mold/termites in the walls of your home! To get these covered you will have to get a separate policy in order to do so!

What this all means is you should talk to your insurance agent and carrier about everything that you want covered and what policies you will need to get to cover any gaps in coverage! Never be afraid to ask!

How Are You Sure Your Homeowner’s Insurance Ready For Summer?

April 14, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

vw-camper-336606_960_720The days are getting longer, the cold weather is getting warmer, and you’re spending more time outside—this must mean that summer is almost here! We all can use some warm sunshine and better weather these days, but with the coming of summer it comes time to look at your Homeowner’s Insurance policy to make sure you still can have a great time this summer without any worry!

An example of a summer activity that would require you to review your homeowner’s policy would be building a fire pit in your backyard! Fire pits and open grills come with their own unique sets of risks, and while most Homeowner’s Insurance policies usually cover grilling activity and conventional grills—fire pits and other kinds of barbecue structures might not be covered on your policy! Another thing to consider would be local ordinances—some municipalities might not allow a fire pit to be built due to local Burn Laws, or due to the proximity of the pit to the home itself! Remember that Homeowner’s Policies do not cover damages caused by illegal activity, so keep that in mind!

If you are planning on doing any home repairs this summer make sure you have adequate insurance protection! Talk with your agent or carrier to find out if your policy will still function if you are doing work to your home—if not ask about Builder’s Risk Policy to get yourself covered! Contractor’s usually have some type of liability insurance associated with their business, but it is always better to be safe than sorry!

financing-3536755_960_720If you already have a pool you’ve likely added coverage for any pool-related mishaps that might occur, but if you are building a new pool (Even an above-ground pool!) you will have to let your insurance carrier know! Swimming pools create a whole new dimension of risk for any homeowner and will always need to be covered under their homeowner’s policy to make sure you’re covered if anything goes wrong!

Before you kick up your feet next to the pool this summer, take a look at your policy to see that it is primed and ready to protect you no matter how you choose to enjoy the summer season!

How Can I Save Money On Homeowner’s Insurance?

April 3, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

earth-1149733_960_720As Bob Dylan sang in 1963, “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, and now in 2020 the song still holds true—we are facing drastic changes, and with these changes come a new set of challenges for just about everyone around the globe! With people needing to stretch their assets further and further, it becomes a necessity to trim down their expenses anywhere they can, and homeowner’s insurance is sometimes one of those expenses that some don’t know can be reduced through being proactive and by working with your insurance carrier!credit-squeeze-522549_960_720

First way to reduce the cost of your insurance would be to bundle any existing policies that you might have, such as if you have an Auto Insurance policy with another company—it would be worth it to ask for a discount on them both if you were to bundle them together with a single company! Insurance companies love it when you give them more business—if you can convince them you will switch for a discount, they might take you up on it!

Raising your credit score can also vastly help your Homeowner’s Insurance rates since insurers use this information to determine your premium payments! Depending on the insurance company and the state you reside, your credit history can increase your Homeowner’s Insurance rates by almost 30%! Make sure that you keep up with your payments and keep the amount of credit you use to a minimum in order to benefit from a lower rate!

Making your home safer can also help you save money on Homeowner’s Insurance! If you have an up-to-date home security system, a damage resistant roof (Metal roofing is a good example), or anything that makes your house a safer place to be in you can probably use it to help get a discount on your premium rates! Just make sure that the cost of the upgrade does not outweigh the discount amount!

There are many other ways to gain a discount with an insurance company, and I find it worth it to always ask! It’s better to ask than to wonder!

Life/Love Insurance

February 21, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

insurance-451282_960_720Life Insurance isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when finding ways to express your love, but it’s a great way to do so! I say this because 75% of people that buy a policy do so because of love—and this also explains why many have described Life Insurance as being “love insurance”!

While having benefits paid out from a Life Insurance policy is not the same as your family having you around, it still is a great way to show your family your appreciation to them in your passing! This also can apply if you are single too, if you have an aging parent, or are a guardian for a sibling or other family member—be sure to keep them in mind this Valentine’s Day! You love them with all your heart and wouldn’t want them to be left without your financial support if something were to happen to you! baby-3109433_960_720

Love crosses many boundaries, takes many forms, and comes with many ways to express it. This Valentine’s Day season show the loves in your life that you will be there for them as long as they are alive with Life Insurance! Your loved ones will always appreciate the foresight that you had and will always remember how much you cared for them long after you are gone!

Life Insurance is a Promise!

February 7, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

heart-700141_960_720Valentine’s Day 2020 is rapidly approaching, and we can see that retailers and spouses everywhere are feeling the pressure! Last year in 2019, Valentine’s Day shoppers spent a whopping $20.7 billion on candy, jewelry, stuffed animals, flowers, and other romantic gifts according to the National Retail Federation! On average a person in the United States plans to spend an average of $196.31, which is up a huge 21% jump over last year’s previous record of $161.96!

With these amounts in mind, why not add life insurance to the list of gifts you need to buy for your spouse? With the average Life Insurance policy costing as little as $150 per year, the math really starts to make sense! Did you know that according to LIMRA, 1 out of 3 consumers believe their spouse or partner should have more life insurance? This tells us that instead of walking up and down the corridors of a local mall looking for a paper-1100254_960_720Valentine’s gift, you should be walking into your insurance provider’s office to get life insurance!

Always remember that Life Insurance is a promise, and it is a promise to those you love that you will be there for them, protect them, help them up—even if you have passed away. As Aristotle once said, “A promise made must be a promise kept”, so don’t break your promises and get a life insurance plan!

What To Do If Your Pipes Freeze!

January 31, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

icicles-3529002_960_720If you wake up one day and find that your water is barely running or not at all when you try to turn on a faucet, you probably have a frozen pipe! You will probably also immediately notice that it is extremely cold to the touch too! Thawing a pipe can be a very, very expensive scenario to take care of if done improperly—and if you have ever experienced this, you will definitely know that bursting pipes are not fun!

Thawing pipes is usually a simple process to take care of, first just turn off your water main (It’s usually in front of the house, if not call your water company to find out!), and slightly open a faucet to allow it to drain while it naturally thaws! To speed the process up, you can use things like pouring warm (Never hot!) water on the pipe, or even running a hair dryer over the frozen pipe to help the ice melt!

It is always good to repair cracks in walls, missing bricks, holes in insulation when you ice-3173982_960_720have the opportunity so that all of your pipes in your home can stay at a reasonable temperature! Another good trick is to slightly have a couple of faucets drip-running at all times during the cold to keep the water in your home’s pipes thawed and in motion! It’s alright if water pipes get somewhat cold, but your main goal is to prevent them from freezing over!

If you find your pipes are freezing each year, you might want to consider getting your pipes insulated, hooked up to a pipe heater, or placed lower in the ground! These are all expensive in their own right, but it might save your house from catastrophic damage during a cold front! Always remember it is usually less expensive to prevent water damage, than it is to repair water damage—take care of your house so your house can take care of you!

How To Protect Your Car From Hail Damage!

January 24, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

hail-1614239_960_720-2Did you know that there’s one type of storm that, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (The NOAA is the U.S. Agency responsible for monitoring national weather patterns) that causes $1 billion in damage to crops and property each year? Hailstorms! And since Hail can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your vehicle, it definitely becomes worth it to know what to do during a hail storm!

If you are on the road during a hailstorm, try to pull over under some sort of cover and wait it out! Places like covered gas stations, parking garages, and tree cover can be very useful during these moments! Sometimes you can find a bank drive-thru that has covering over an ATM that can be helpful as well! hail-damage-1272030_960_720

If you park your car outside without shelter, try to keep some large and thick blankets in your trunk! Placing thick blankets over your car during hailstorms can help prevent a lot of force from the impact of the ice from creating a dent! But, say for instance you didn’t have a thick blanket to put over your car? What you could do is place your floor mats and trunk mats on top of your car! It may not prevent all dents from happening, but at least you prevented it from being much worse!

hail-273293_960_720Staying up-to-date with the weather is probably the best way to prevent damage to your car! By doing so you can make sure your car is safe and under cover when hail is in the forecast, and although this may not prevent you from being in a hailstorm—it will greatly reduce it!

Keep these tips in mind to keep yourself and your car happy through the winter months (And those freak hail-storms in July too!)

Your Business and Cyber Security

October 5, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

internet-1862312_960_720In 2019, Cybersecurity has become such a huge issue and will continue to do so as we become more and more reliant on computers in all aspects of our lives! It is forecasted that by 2022 there will be 29 billion devices connected to the internet and the means that there are 29 billion doors for a hacker to get through!

With this huge influx of devices on the internet it becomes extremely important to make sure that the ones that are connected to your business are secured, as well as you investing in good cybersecurity insurance to protect your business IF a hacker is able to get through your first line of defense—security on your own network!

Security on your own network usually comes in the way of encrypting all access points,internet-3563638_960_720 encrypting data, using antivirus software, and using common sense! Educate yourself and employees about using unauthorized or “found” hardware (USB Stick in the parking lot for instance), and let them know that they are not to use such things under any circumstances! Another point of security that you should go over with everyone in your business would be visiting unknown or non-work related websites, doing so may keep your business from running into a hacker!

When investing in cybersecurity insurance, be sure to let your agent know everything about your business so you know that you are properly covered—and many times you can add it as a rider to your General Liability coverage! Jut be sure to ask what your options are and do not wait, we are at the beginning of a new internet age!
