How To Be a Better Driver in the Rain

January 10, 2020 By Flor Caballero Lynch

skyline-963526_960_720Did you know that almost half of all accidents that occur in the U.S. are due to the rain? The U.S. Department of Transportation states that over 700,000 accidents per year are caused by the rain, and the number is continually going up due to more and more drivers being on the road each and every year! As all of us will experience rain in our driving careers more times than we’d like, it’s important to know a few things that will decrease your chances at getting into a rain-related accident!

The first and best thing you can do is to slow down! When you are going at faster speeds in the rain, your tires are not able to grip onto the road and it will cause you to lose control! The best way to visualize how to safely drive in the rain: Imagine yourself car-2607059_960_720driving with a large triple layer wedding cake in your backseat, and you are taking it to your sister’s wedding—you wouldn’t want to be the one to say you ruined her cake, thus you will drive slower and safer than normal! So when it is raining, just drive with same care for your life and slow down in the rain!

The next tip is something that a lot of drivers forget about in the rain: Increase the distance you follow other cars with! Normally in dry weather you want to be 2-3 car lengths behind the driver in front of you, but when it’s raining, and especially if you are on a highway—make that gap bigger so you can give yourself more room to brake! Hydroplaning is the main cause of wrecks in the rain, and if you slam on the brakes due to being too close to another driver you might end up in an accident! Remember that blur-1845534_960_720accidents on the road can happen in a blink of an eye—just give yourself more distance to avoid it!

This next tip is a very useful one: Do not use cruise control in the rain! The cruise control computer on most cars will not be able to tell if it is raining and might cause your car to accelerate when caught in a hydroplane—which is the last thing you want to happen! If you find yourself in a hydroplane movement, just let off the gas and pump the brakes until you gain back control!

The bottom line is to just exercise caution when it is raining, and if at all possible, try to avoid driving in the rain if you can! Getting into an accident just is not worth it!

Fender Bender in Parking Lot, Do I Need A Police Report?

December 20, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

traffic-2251530_960_720If you are in your truck and driving through a parking lot you know how tricky it can get! People popping out from everywhere, cars coming and going around you faster than you can hit the horn! If during one of these treks you find yourself in a fender bender and get hit in the parking lot you might be tempted to not call the police to file a report if it’s small enough, but in all cases you definitely should!

The reason why is it establishes what happened and it can help you if you were driving safely! It also creates a record for your insurance company to follow along for their own investigation—it speeds up the claim process and helps you get your truck back on the road faster! You also do not want to pay for things out of your own pocket, you may be denied for an insurance claim on your truck as well if you do not report it properly and promptly! truck-2920533_960_720

Another big reason is you do not want the other driver to claim something on your insurance if you do not get a police report and it wasn’t your fault! You will have a slim chance to prove what happened at that point, and you’ll be adding insult to injury by paying a higher monthly insurance rate on top of paying for your truck ’s repairs if you paid for the repairs yourself!

The Cheapest Way Is Not Always The Best Way!

December 13, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

truck-602567_960_720When you are running your own transport company, you’ll want to find ways to save money to help your bottom line, and there are things that you should do such as make sure your drivers are not accelerating too hard and needlessly speeding! But there are other things that you should not cut out, and one of the most important things to make sure you keep is your insurance on your trucks at all times!

I heard from a friend of mine who worked for an owner of a transport company who regularly took the insurance coverage off of trucks that he wasn’t hauling with at the time, and it really ended up being more costly in the end! He had two trucks parked in his gated lot, and one night an uninsured drunk driver careened off the road and was going so fast that he went through the gates—hitting not just one, but two currently uninsured, but 100% working trucks!  The drunk driver was alright since he ran away and was found asleep under a bench a few blocks away, but the trucks were worse for wear!

The owner thought by having them parked on his company’s property they were safe and could save some money by not having them insured, but due to this accident he ended up having to pay to fix them both out of pocket for a price that he could have paid a year of insurance on both with! Don’t make a mistake like his, and always be sure to insure all your trucks at all times! car-accident-1538175_960_720

Just remember the old saying: a penny wise a pound foolish! Never take shortcuts when making your own business, and don’t cut out insurance for your trucks just to save some money! Ask your insurance agents about any potential gaps as well, such as driving bobtail or if a driver is driving for personal errands—it is always best to insure all trucks at all times to make sure your trucks are able to be back on the road if they are knocked out of commission for any reason!

Truck Insurance Renewal Tips

March 22, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

truck-2920533_960_720

Truck Insurance is a vital part of being a trucker and is as essential as diesel is to a truck! The law states that you are unable to operate a truck at all that is not covered by insurance, so it doesn’t hurt to learn about what you will need to have come renewal time in order for it to go smoothly!

First and foremost, if you do not renew due to late or non-payment, it will hurt your ability to find coverage during renewal—which you may have to settle for a company that you do not prefer at that point! Always be sure to keep up with your payments!

truck-602567_960_720

Second, take note of the methods that you get around in your truck, if you travel  without a trailer regularly you should consider Bobtail Insurance, or if you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters you could get Physical Damage insurance to cover any costs that you might run into due to a fire or even vandalism!

Third, let your agent know about any life changes that you have, such as getting married, getting divorced, or any difference in your family situation. Sometimes these changes can cause your pricing to go higher or lower depending on the situation, but either way it is always good to know that you are getting the right coverage for the right price!

Physical Damage Coverage Can Save Your Wallet

March 15, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

truck-2663163_960_720

Buying or leasing a truck is a huge undertaking and usually an even bigger investment, this means for many truckers that their truck is more than just a means to haul cargo—it’s essential to their livelihood! Most truckers that I have talked to put up most, if not all of what they own for their truck, so it makes sense to want to have the best coverage for every situation!

Physical Damage coverage is used to repair or replace any type of damage to your truck or trailer, so things like collision, fire, hail, natural disasters, and even theft are covered through this coverage! Another sweet part of the deal is how if you are broken down, or need to have your truck in storage while it waits to get repaired it will be covered!

trailer-2821120_960_720

Say for instance you are heading west from the Cumberland Gap to Johnson City, Tennessee and you run into some motor trouble, if you don’t have Physical Damage coverage you can be paying out of pocket upwards of $15,000+ on some of these newer tractor trailers! Instead of suffering through a huge hit to the wallet like that, look into getting Physical Damage coverage! You’ll thank yourself later!

Finding The Right Truck Driver

March 8, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

truck-2138974_960_720

Finding the right driver is pretty hard, but it isn’t rocket science—there are ways to make it easier on yourself so you can find the right driver quickly! You may have to spend a little money to find one with a hiring agency, but there are ways around this as well!

If you already have a current driver you should utilize them as a tool during the interview process, during interviews have them ask each candidate questions and see if they feel they could handle the job since they know it firsthand, this will help weed out some of the ones that shouldn’t be there in the first place!

truck-856345_960_720

After they have passed the first interview have them demonstrate basic skills for you and your driver, see if they can handle the truck correctly—backing up, turning, going through each of the gears. Also see if they know how to do the normal day-to-day tasks such as connecting air lines, and hooking and unhooking a trailer without issue!

Then if they have passed on to the next stage, you will need to run their CSA profile (Compliance, Safety, and Accountability, when you are able to do so legally) in order to see if they have been a safe driver throughout their career—if they have gone through this process with flying colors, I think you might have a quality driver on your hands!

CSA Score and What It Means

March 1, 2019 By Flor Caballero Lynch

truck-driver-614191_960_720-2

If you are in the trucking industry at all, you definitely know that your CSA score is extremely important to the trucking company and to their drivers as well. CSA is short for Compliance, Safety, and Accountability, and these publicly published scores are used to identify motor carriers that are ‘high-risk’. These scores play a huge role in your insurance rates since all insurance companies use this score when drafting up a new insurance plan, so it helps to know what goes towards your score!

The lower the score the lower your premium, the higher the score the higher your premium is a good way to think about your score. Actions such as unsafe driving, amount of crashes, vehicle maintenance, driving under the influence, driver fitness, as well as unsafe driving with hazardous materials all influence and raise your score! If you practice safe and defensive driving, and keep your truck in good shape your score will go lower over time!

trucker-2946821_960_720-2

Another way to improve your score is to have regular inspections both in-house to makesure your fleet is up to snuff, and by not failing government inspections, whether it be for tires, leaks in brake lines, and the biggest violator: broken lights, which makes up over a quarter of all violations! Most violations are issued during roadside inspections when the officer is looking over mileage logs—so be sure those are accurate too!
